Sacrifices Yielding Results
President Obasanjo in an Independence day speech on Saturday morning expressed his pleasure with the Nations progress and plans for the future. In his speech to the nation, the president appealed to citizens to resist negative attitudes that "get us nowhere" and instead join hands to continue the nation's development. The president told his audience that his a government is a listening and caring government, despite what some certain people might be saying and promised not to rise petrol prices until the end of 2006.
The president talked at length about the opportunity that Nigeria and its citizens have to develop the country. "Nigeria is not yet where she should be in terms of development, but it what we are sure of is that the roadmap is there and it is clear." He said that Nigerians need to be thankful to God for giving them another opportunity to come together and work together for progress. He advised Nigerians to abandon "old and negative attitudes, bitterness, prejudices, and unprogressive ways," and instead grab the opportunity that has been extended to us by God.
The president also spoke about the renewed strength of investments and tourism in the country and confirmed them as proof that the country is on the right path. "Our country is a much better place today even as we continue to strive to do much better. Once again, Nigeria has become a preferred investor destination."
Obasanjo also commended the recent peaceful protests against petrol price increases. He expressed his satisfaction at the manner that the rallies were held, without violence.
