Reports from
Nigeria today are that the
deadly bird flu virus, H5N1 has now been discovered in a total
of eleven Nigerian states and has also been discovered in
Cameroon for the first time.
The virus, which was first detected at a farm in the north of
the country has worked its way south despite the efforts of
Nigeria's health officials. To date, no human deaths due
to the virus have been confirmed but citizens and officials
alike will be very worried after the news that the virus has
been detected as far south as Lagos, Nigeria's commercial
capital.
Health officials
around the world have been complaining from the start that
Nigeria is not doing enough to contain the deadly virus.
They have expressed their fear that once the virus reaches
Africa, it might become incurable due to a lack of "facilities
and skill" There is a real fear that the thrive in Africa,
mutate into a more deadly virus for humans and spread rapidly.
The virus continues to spread as latest reports are that it has
now been detected in poultry in a Cameroonian town bordering
Nigeria's Benue State. The deadly H5N1 virus had already
been confirmed in Egypt and Chad.
